Transmission Cost Blueprint for Renewables
on FERC Agenda
The potential impact for getting distributed renewable energy generation from remote locations to load is huge, of course. Boiled down to its basics, the FERC is considering who pays, how much, under what circumstances and in what geographic footprint — a tall order to be sure.

At a wind-energy conference in Wyoming last month, Gov. Freudenthal delivered a stern warning to wind-turbine developers, telling them to make sure their projects don’t harm a small bird called the sage grouse. “What I have is an obsession with making sure that the economy of this state continues to function, and it won’t if that bird gets listed,” according to his office’s transcript of his remarks.

The CEO of Anadarko echoed many when he said that a tax on carbon dioxide would be more straightforward than the bill’s so-called cap-and-trade plan, which seeks to “hide the ball” and targets production instead of consumption. The climate bill would result in higher energy prices, and “green” jobs would be created at the cost of some conventional work.
