Time Running Out for Company to Cap Methane Wells

Time is running out for a company that owns dozens of abandoned coal-bed methane gas wells in northern Wyoming. The Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission set a July 1 deadline for Wyoming Consolidated Gas to cap the 42 wells in the northern region of the state in order to come into compliance.

If the company doesn’t meet some financial and operational standards by then, state regulators plan to use its reclamation bonds to pay for the wells to be capped.

Ownership of the wells has changed frequently, but the new president of Wyoming Consolidated Gas says the work will be done by the deadline.

The commission isn’t as confident. It has put plans to plug another 82 abandoned wells on hold because it expects to have to take care of the wells near Buffalo.
