New Life for Old Field

CASPER – Anadarko Petroleum has squeezed an additional 10 million barrels of oil from the historic Salt Creek field north of Casper since beginning an enhanced oil recovery effort in 2003, according to the company.

In doing so, Anadarko has also sequestered – or stored – 181 billion cubic feet of carbon dioxide. CO2, the main greenhouse gas blamed for global warming, is pumped into aging oilfields to help sweep volumes of oil that otherwise would remain in place.

“While significantly reducing our carbon footprint, Salt Creek continues to provide jobs to the area, spur economic development and is the primary driver behind the recent increase in Wyoming’s total oil production levels,” Anadarko general manager Craig Walters said in a prepared statement.

Anadarko’s enhanced oil recovery operations at Salt Creek and the Monell fields together sequester enough CO2 each day to offset the equivalent emissions of about half a million cars, according to Walters.
