Wind Energy Definite Part of Platte County’s Future
By Amanda Fry
While Platte County and Southeast Wyoming might not have the mineral resources that can be found in other areas of the state, they do have wind. In the near future, landowners and counties in the area are looking to utilize this resource, and join the growing ranks of clean energy providers in the nation.
Grant Stumbough, Southeastern Wyoming Resource Conservation and Development Coordinator, has been working with local Wind Energy Associations to promote a grassroots approach to wind development. He said when wind energy companies work with local residents, chances for project success and community support are increased.
“We need to communicate with landowners every step of the way,” he said. Stumbough said there are currently 11 Wind Energy Associations in the Southeastern Wyoming area. He said four of these groups are in the final process of negotiations with wind energy companies.
“We have interest in all of our associations from wind developers,” he added. According to Stumbough, there are currently 675,000 acres in Southeastern Wyoming slated for wind development through landowner associations. If developed, the area has the potential of producing over 6,000 megawatts of energy.
